St. John’s Cemetery is comprised of approximately 12 acres of land adjacent to the Bedford Highway at Fairview Cove on the Halifax peninsula. There are approximately 13,000 burial lots with over 12,000 interments of remains to date. As with many cemeteries in the local area, burial lots are becoming scarce. However, St. John’s still has an assortment of lots (full body, sextuple cremation, quadruple cremation, double cremation, and single cremation) remaining for burial rights conveyance purchase (see below for burial lot descriptions and capacities). Burial rights conveyances can be purchased either pre-need or at-need. However, we strongly suggest that you consider the purchase of a burial rights conveyance in advance of need as doing so relieves your grieving family of this task and also secures the availability of a burial lot for time of need.
Our cemetery accepts both traditional casket and “green” (without casket and without embalming) for full body burials.
Our facility is inter-faith and non-denominational, lovingly administered by the Parish of St. John’s Anglican Church, Halifax.

Burial Lots
Full Body (traditional/casket) Lot
Full Body (traditional/casket) Lot measuring approximately 36”x108” will accept one full body burial in casket or green and six cremation burials post-full body burial. Vaults of any kind are not accepted. Approved grave markers, either an upright, a slant, or a flat, depending on the particular lot are permitted. When two adjoining side-by-side Full Body (Traditional Casket) Lots are purchased at the same time, an approved upright grave marker spanning the two lots is permitted.
Sextuple Cremation Lot
Sextuple Cremation Lot measuring approximately 36″x54″ will accept six cremation burials. Vaults of any kind are not accepted. Approved grave markers, either an upright, a slant, or a flat, depending on the particular lot are permitted.
Quadruple Cremation Lot
Quadruple Cremation Lot measuring approximately 36″x54″ will accept four cremation burials. Vaults of any kind are not accepted. Approved grave markers, either an upright, a slant, or a flat, depending on the particular lot are permitted.
Double Cremation Lot
Double Cremation Lot measuring approximately 36″x36″ will accept up to two cremation burials. Vaults of any kind are not accepted. Only approved flat grave markers are permitted. There is a very limited quantity of this sized lot remaining for conveyance.
Single Cremation Lot
Single Cremation Lot measuring approximately 22″x20″ will accept one cremation burial. Only approved flat grave markers are permitted. There is a very limited quantity of this sized lot remaining for conveyance.

Grave Markers
Only grave markers approved by our Parish are permitted to be installed on a cemetery lot. Before ordering a grave marker, please have your grave marker supplier of choice contact our office to ascertain the size and style limitations for the particular grave lot. Any grave marker delivered to our cemetery for installation without prior approval will not be permitted to be installed.
The Parish is not responsible for the purchase, installation, and maintenance of any grave marker installed on any lot in our cemetery and assumes no responsibility and liability for damage to, regardless of the cause, nor any care and maintenance of any grave marker installed in our cemetery. We strongly suggest that you 1) check out the warranties being offered by your monument supplier of choice, 2) purchase liability and perils coverage from your insurance provider for the grave marker, and 3) contact your grave marker provider immediately to report any damage or movement so they may attend to its servicing. No grave marker is to be installed or serviced in our cemetery without prior permission being granted by the Parish and any grave marker providers or servicers must contact the Parish to schedule the installation, removal, maintenance, or servicing of any grave marker installed in our cemetery. Please note that due to mechanical mowing, grass clippings may rest on grave markers from time to time. Items placed on or about grave markers are to be done so in accordance with our Parish’s prevailing Cemetery Regulations.
General Size Guidelines:
- Full Body (traditional/casket) Lot may accommodate, at the head of the lot, a single upright stone grave marker with maximum dimensions, including its base, of 30” in length, 12” in width, and 32” in height; or a single slant stone grave marker with maximum dimensions, including its base, of 30″ in length, 18″ in width, and 12” in height; or a single flat with maximum dimensions of 24″ in length, 16″ in width, and 3” in depth. Two single casket lots side-by-side may accommodate, at the head of the lot, an upright stone grave marker centered and spanning the two lots with maximum dimensions, including its base, of 54” in length, 14” in width, and 38” in height or a single slant stone grave marker with maximum dimensions, including its base, of 38″ in length, 18″ in width, and 12” in height. A single additional approved flat marker, with maximum dimensions of 24″ in length, 16″ in width, and 3” in depth, may be installed on the body of a single casket lot if there already is an approved stone marker installed at the head of the lot.
- Sextuple Cremation Lot may accommodate, at the head of the lot, a single upright stone grave marker with maximum dimensions, including its base, of 30” in length, 12” in width, and 32” in height; or a single slant stone grave marker with maximum dimensions, including its base, of 30″ in length, 18″ in width, and 00” in height; or a single flat with maximum dimensions of 24″ in length, 16″ in width, and 3” in depth.
- Quadruple Cremation Lot may accommodate, at the head of the lot, a single upright stone grave marker with maximum dimensions, including its base, of 28” in length, 12” in width, and 30” in height; or a single slant stone grave marker with maximum dimensions, including its base, of 30″ in length, 18″ in width, and 12” in height; or a single flat with maximum dimensions of 24″ in length, 16″ in width, and 3” in depth.
- Double Cremation Lot may accommodate, in the assigned location on the lot, a single flat stone or bronze grave marker with maximum dimensions of 24” in length, 12” in width, and 3” in depth.
- Single Cremation Lot may accommodate, in the assigned location on the lot, a single flat stone or bronze grave marker with maximum dimensions of 16” in length, 10” in width, and 3” in depth. Grave markers on single cremation lots are to be installed only after the burial of remains. If a grave marker has been installed prior to the burial of remains, the marker will have to be removed prior to the burial and reinstalled following the burial and any costs incurred for such grave marker movement is the responsibility of the deceased’s estate or heirs.
Note:
- Some older full body (traditional/casket) lots measure approximately 30”x108” and, therefore, approved grave markers will require a shorter length in such cases.
- Placement of grave markers at the head of a full body lot that include cremation niches, due to their width, may impede any future full body burials in the lot and, as such, may require them to be temporarily moved to accommodate a full body burial. Any required movement, and the associated costs, of such a grave marker will be the responsibility of the deceased’s estate or heirs.
- In the process of maintaining our cemetery grounds, mechanical mowers and utility vehicles may ride over any flat markers placed on any burial lot.
- Existence of grave markers of varying sizes, shapes, and styles in our cemetery that may not conform to the above guidelines is not to be construed in any way as permission or approval for such like grave markers today or in the future.
- Obelisk style monuments are no longer accepted for placement in our cemetery.
- Wooden crosses and other such monuments are considered temporary (for less than one year) and must conform to size restrictions.
- Delivery and placement of grave markers will be accepted only between April 15 and November 15.
